Ávila is known for it’s perfectly preserved and imposing medieval walls 3 m thick surrounding the entire town.  The enclosed area is 77 acres with a perimeter of 2,516 metres (2,752 yd) with an average height of of the walls being 12 m (39 ft) and access via 9 gates located around the town.
