Hiking in Bastei & Rathen, Saxony-Switzerland National Park
We stayed at Berghotel Bastei near the bridge, so we hiked down along the steep winding paths through the woods in the hills of Saxony-Switzerland National Park and eventually reached a small, charming riverside town of Rathen, which has many decent hotels for visiting wanting to take a hike up to the bridge.
From Rathen it takes around an hour of solid climbing to reach the bridge with an overall incline of 600 ft (200 meters).
There is also an open-air amphitheatre which hold concerts and plays during the summer months, but reaching to the theatre itself is a challenge as it involves walking up 135 metres from the entrance.
A little further north is a waterfall but to get there you’d have to walk around the lake Amselsee and then take a path which is gradual at first but gets progressively steeper as you get closer to the waterfall. But luckily there are a couple of shops that sell cold/hot drinks as well as snacks and food and places to sit down and relax.
